15 day Uganda birding and wildlife tour exposes you to the biodiversity of Uganda in its different forms. You will experience the best of Uganda in many perspectives, including the cultural perspective. The tour leads you to Uganda’s wildlands that are composed of rain forests and extensive grasslands, all of which are home to over 18,783 species of fauna and flora. Within the rain forests, you will encounter a plethora of forest birds and witness various tunes and melodies that remind you that Uganda is the pearl of Africa. As you continue your journey, the further gets closer and the dreams become true. The variety of wildlife and nature within the savannahs and plains become a scene to linger upon. 

You will get a chance to witness over 1090 bird species which are over 50% of Africa’s bird richness and 11% of the world’s bird population. Of the country’s bird species, 15 are endangered and 11 are vulnerable whereas several species are classified as threatened at the global and regional levels. As you traverse the different ecosystems and zones that decorate the country’s biodiversity, you will also visit a few cultural places to acquire an understanding of how the changes in ecological composition and form influenced the life of the traditional African man overtime. These cultural places give a vivid explanation of certain beliefs, and why they were adopted. 

During your birding and wildlife trip, you will also visit different national parks for nature and landscape views. Starting from the shores of lake victoria at Mabamba bay to the Murchison falls at the Nile river across the woodlands of lake Mburo national park and an escape to Kibale, the primate capital of the world.

The 15 day Uganda birding and wildlife tour starts from Mabamba at the shores of Lake Victoria. Mabamba is an Important Bird Area that is gifted with over 260 bird species, that include both migratory and resident birds.  From Mabamba, you will be transferred to Lake Mburo National Park for another birding and wildlife escapade. 

Lake Mburo is small but with varied habitats for its size. These range from acacia woodland, dry hillsides, rocky outcrops, bushy thickets, open and wooded savannah, seasonal and permanent swamps. All these habitats and ecosystems host a phenomenal number of wildlife and birds (over 315 species of birds.) The small park is famous for its many zebras, impalas and the world's largest antelope species: the eland, which are not found in any other park in Uganda.

From Mburo, you will be transferred Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the land of the mountain gorillas. Bwindi is majorly known for the mountain gorillas, however, it is also a bird watchers’ haven with an estimate of 347 species of birds. The forests also host over 459 mountain gorillas and are surrounded by a native tribe called the Batwa. These form a combination of cultural and wildlife experiences that wow you with world class experience. 

Proceeding to Queen Elizabeth National park, you will have experiences within both sectors of the park. Queen Elizabeth National park is well known for “the Big four” i.e. the elephants, buffaloes, lions and leopards and is gifted with over 600 species of birds and a variety of wildlife. You will explore the kasenyi plains and have boat cruises on the Kazinga channel. You will also have scenic views of the tree climbing lions in Ishasha. From Queen, you will visit Kibale National Park. 

Kibale’s beautiful ecosystems are felt by an estimated 340 bird species. 77% of Kibale is covered by forests and the rest is summed up into swamps and grasslands. This makes Kibale both diverse and spectacular. Some of the common bird species include the green breasted pitta, the African Pitta and the Grey-winged Robin among others. Kibale is also gifted with over 1500 chimpanzees and 13 primate species. The safari ends in Murchison falls national park, which is Uganda's largest park hosting over 87 mammals and over 451 bird species. The park gets its name from the spectacular Murchison Falls located on the Nile. At the falls,  there's a spectacular view of the Nile squeezing through a tiny chasm of about 7 meters between rocks exploding into the pool 42 meters below.

At the end of your 15 day Uganda birding and wildlife safari, you will have garnered your experiences, and of course your memories.

Day 1

Activity of the Day

Transfer to Mabamba Swamp on the Shores of Lake Victoria & Shoebill Boat Excursion and afternoon transfer to Lake Mburo National Park.

  • The guide will pick you up from your hotel in the morning and transfer you to Mabamba Swamp on the shores of Lake Victoria. The excursion usually lasts for three hours although the option of a full day is also available. The swamp is a beautiful environment, composed of papyrus plants and water lilies. You will cruise through the papyrus on boats while looking out for the majestic Shoebill. As you cruise, you will spot several different kind of birds which live and hunt in the swamp. Such birds include: African Pigmy Goose, Black Crake, Black Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Black-crowned Waxbill, Black-headed Heron, Black-winged Stilt, Pied Wagtail, African Firefinch, African Fish Eagle, African Green Pigeon, Pink-backed Pelican among others. Mabamba also hosts flocks of Paleartic migratory birds  from the October to March of every year. After the excursion, you will be transferred to Lake Mburo National Park. Check into the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2

Activity of the Day

Birding, game viewing and boat cruise on Lake Mburo.

  • After breakfast, you will have an early morning drive through the savannah and woodland landscapes. You will have a look at different bird species and wildlife within the swamps and savannah ecosystems. Such species include: the Bateleur, Coqui Francolin, Black-bellied Bustard, Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove, Brown Parrot, Red-headed Lovebird, Ross’s Turaco, Bare-faced Go-away-bird, Green Wood-hoopoe and the Common Scimitarbill among others. If you are lucky, you might spot a herd of Africa's biggest antelope: the eland, which is only found in Mburo National Park. You will also see Zebras, Impalas, Buffalos etc.
    After lunch, you will have 2-hours boat cruise on lake mburo to observe some water birds including the rare finfoot. Keep an eye out for crocodiles, buffaloes and hippos as well as plenty of water birds. You will also have an optional trip to Rubanga forest.

Day 3

Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

  • After your breakfast, you will do an early morning birding game drive after which you will transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Southwestern Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to the endangered mountain gorillas. The park is a UNESCO heritage site that was founded in 1994 and it holds a plethora of wildlife and bird species. On reaching Bwindi, you will check into the lodge and look around your camp into the forest and communities to have a look at some birds.

Day 4

Activity of the Day

Morning birding, forest and community walks at Bwindi.

  • After breakfast, follow around the different trails in the impenetrable forest to spot some bird species. The River Ivi Trail between Buhoma and Nkuringo is recommended, as is Buhoma’s forest-edge Munyaga River Trail. Ruhija’s Bamboo Trail, leading to the 2607m Rwamunyoni peak, and Mubwindi Swamp Trail areMunyanga River Trail, in the valley below the Buhoma trailhead, provides a short walk to view birds and primates along the forest edge. Waterfall Trail leads through one of Uganda’s most pristine tracts of rainforest, passing beneath tree ferns, epiphytic ferns and orchids to visit three sparking crystal clear waterfalls. Rushura Hill Trail provides expansive views across the plains of the Albertine Rift. Bwindi has 23 of the Albertine rift endemics and over 350 bird species. Some of such birds include: african emerald cuckoo, common bulbul, african blue, white-tailed blue flycatchers, the red-headed bluebill, the blue sun bird and the short-tailed warbler among others. You will move through the forest and watch some forest birds as well as the community.

Day 5

Activity of the Day

Gorilla trekking

  • After breakfast, you will transfer to the information center for gorilla trekking. You will be briefed about the guidelines and precautions of gorilla trekking. While here, you will carry out registration and join others for a gorilla trekking briefing about the precautions and guidelines of the gorilla trekking activity. You will then be assigned a gorilla group, meet the ranger guide and start the trek into the forest. The forest is usually wet and muddy with steep slopes. However, the sounds and sights of different birds and butterfly species offer a variety of form and color that satisfy you with a rare sort of happiness! The guide  will be ready to answer any question. During this period of time, you will also see a variety of forest birds within the forest. The gorillas are located in different places across the forest and therefore the time taken to find one group varies and can not be estimated before. It is just estimated to range from an hour to over 7 hours. Once you have reached them, you will be allowed to stay for one hour to observe these gentle giants. During this time, you will observe the gorillas carrying out their daily activities and also have photography moments. At the end of the trek, you will return to the park headquaters and information centre to pick certificates.

Day 6

Activity of the Day

Morning birding and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

  • After breakfast, you will do morning birding within the forest and after transfer to Ishasha sector in the South of Queen Elizabeth National Park. On your way to the lodge, you will also witness a few birds and game within this sector. Check into the lodge and have a look at some birds around your lodge.

Day 7

Activity of the Day

Birding and Game viewing in Ishasha

  • After breakfast, you will have a full day birding experience at Ishasha. Ishasha is home to the tree climbing lions and you will have chances of viewing these lions and have memorable experiences within the park. Queen Elizabeth national park is home to over 600 bird species. Ishasha has a diversity of landscapes that are home to a number of species. These include: shoebill, grey kestral, african green pigeon, african wattled plover, green crombec, brown snake eagle, stripped king fisher, helmeted guinea fowl, hooded vulture and the grey-backed fiscal among others. You will have different sessions and move through different areas to have stunning sites of birds. You will also witness the tree climbing lions,  Antelopes, large herds of elephants and buffalos among others.  Go back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 8

Activity of the Day

Transfer to the Northern sector of Queen while birding in transit

  • After breakfast, you will transfer to the Northern sector of Queen Elizabeth National park. While in transit, you will witness many birds along the way. You will also have exciting views of wildlife and nature. Reaching the North, you will check into the lodge and do an evening gamedrive and have more sights of birds and wildlife. You can either take the route to Kasenyi plains or Mweya peninsula. You will see birds like the croaking cisticola, long created eagle, flapet lark, black belied bustard and the hooded vulture among others.

Day 9

Activity of the Day

Morning birding and afternoon boat cruise.

  • After breakfast, you will have an early morning drive through the Kasenyi plains. You will have sights of birds and other game like Elephants, Buffaloes, Antelopes, Lions, and Hyenas. After this, you will transfer to the Mweya peninsula for a boat cruise. You will see a number of birds in the area before the boat cruise on Kazinga channel. The  44km long Kazinga channel connects Lake Edward and Lake Georgea and is home to a variety of bird species. Over 100 species of birds flock the channel such as Harmerkops, Ibis, Fish Eagles, Skimmers, Egrets, Pelicans, and Herons among others. You will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 10

Transfer to kibale

  • After breakfast, you will be transferred to Kibale National Park. Along the way, you will witness a variety of wildlife and nature, including a number of bird species. 
  • Check into the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 11

Activity of the Day

Half day birding and chimp trekking.

  • After breakfast, you will have a birding experience. The park’s beautiful habitants are felt by over 340 bird species that call this partly forest park their home. 77% of Kibale is covered by forests and the rest is summed up into swamps and grasslands. This makes Kibale spectacular. Some of the common bird species include: Superb Sunbird, African Pitta, White-thighed Hornbill, Grey-winged Robin, Blue-shouldered Robin-chat. You will also have an opportunity to do chimp trekking. You will transfer to Kanyanchu, at the park offices and vistor information centre at 7am to meet the ranger guides for registration and pre-trek briefing about what to do and not during chimpanzee trekking. After briefing, you will be divided into groups and each group will be assigned a ranger, after which you will set off to trek into the forest to track a community of Chimpanzees. The trek usually lasts between 3-5 hours and varies due to the movement of the Chimpanzees. 3 large communities of Chimpanzees have been habituated for the tracking adventure. Each of these communities was designed for different kinds of visitors; one is for chimpanzee tracking, the other is for research and the last one was designed for the habituation experience. You will locate the Chimps without so much straining since the location of each of the Chimp community is known before hand by advance trackers and communicated to your guides.

Day 12

Activity of the Day

Full day birding in Bigodi

  • After breakfast, you will have a birding session in Bigodi wetland sanctuary. Bigodi is punctuated by biodiversity and beautiful scenery, and is a birder’s paradise with about 138 species. It also hosts eight species of primates including the black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey and red-tailed monkeys among other. Bushbucks and mongooses can also be found here. The sanctuary was set up to preserve the exclusive environmental features along with the wetland and is managed by the local community. In this area, there are small establishments or groups of people that are prepared to take you through the two main activities, that is the Swamp walk and the community walk. In the swamp walk, you shall take a light walk in the wetlands to observe nature and wildlife including many bird species. During this walk, you will have the oportunity to spot some wildlife and bird species that you hadn't witnessed during the trek. Some of such birds include; the green breasted pitta which is endemic to Kibale forest, the rare Papyrus Gonolek and the great blue turaco.

Day 13

Activity of the Day

Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park.

  • After breakfast, set out for Murchison falls National Park. Check into the lodge and do evening birding. Around the camp and the savnnahs, there are many beautiful birds that can be spotted. 
  • Dinner and overnight.

Day 14

Activity of the Day

Morning game drive and afternoon boat cruise to the top of the falls.

  • After an early morning breakfast, set out for an early morning birding experience. This birdlife is vey impressive, and keeps you constantly entertained, with a profusion of colours and species. You will also see some elusive animals and predators such as Lions, Hyenas, Leopard and Jackal, as they are still out actively hunting in the morning hours and haven’t returned to their hideouts. After lunch, set out for the afternoon boat cruise. The cruise sets off at Paraa, going upstream to the bottom of the Murchison Falls and usually lasts for two hours. Since the Nile is a bird magnet, you will see a variety of birds. Such include: Black-headed Plover, Rock Pratincole, Red-throated Bee-eater, Black-billed Barbet, Speckle fronted Weaver, and the White-browed Sparrow Weaver among others. You will also witness for yourself some animals that come the Nile; Big game such buffaloes, elephants and antelopes can also be sighted drinking and cooling off the heat by the river banks. Crocodiles, hippos and lizards are common in this area.

Day 15

Activity of the Day

Transfer to the Nile Delta and departure.

  • After breakfast, you will have another boat cruise to the Nile Delta. This boat cruise proceeds downstream to the Victoria falls and streches all the way to the shores of Lake Albert. You will witness a number of water birds and the shoebill. Some of such birds include: African skimmer, fish eagle, malachite kingfishers,  African jacana and the saddle billed stork among others. After the boat cruise, return back to the lodge for departure to Kampala.

General Tips for optional trekking activities:

  • Please note the age limit of 15 years and above for chimpanzee tracking.
  • Book your permits well in advance as permits are limited.
  • You should be free from infectious diseases such as Flue which can be passed to the primates since humans share 98.8% DNA with Chimpanzees. If you are found to carry an infectious disease you will not be allowed to track.
  • Every participant has the chance to hire a trekking assistance (porter) who will help carrying the bags and support whenever it is needed. For the trekking assistant an additional fee of US$ 15 is charged.
  • Please note the age limit of 15 years and above for gorilla tracking.
  • Book your permits well in advance as only 8 permits are issued per gorilla group in a day.

What to bring:
