15 day Uganda birding safari leads you to a biodiversity hotspot in Uganda. Uganda - the pearl of Africa is a tourist destination of unmatchable splendour. The country is gifted with a plethora of wildlife which is dispersed within an array of scenic landscapes: the country has 13 landscape categories and 22 main vegetation types (with 96 subtypes) which makes it a compact gem with over 18,783 species of flora and fauna! These landscapes, although majorly known to be rich in biodiversity, are actually part of a wider scale of ecosystems and habitats. These ecosystems are distributed across different regions in the country to form an enduring grandeur that is teeming with a remarkable diversity. The ecosystems range from the snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains, the high altitude montane forests, the open waters of different lakes, the spectacle of islands, the unique blend of semi-arid woodlands, the savannah and forest communities, the wealth of montane vegetation to the forest-fringed crater lakes that stud the rift valley floor and escarpments. The country has an extraordinary amount of diversity in both terrestrial and aquatic habitats and it varies across ethnicity, gender, flora and fauna.

The different ecosystems are punctuated by the profusion of different flora and fauna and are known to support a great number of bird species. The country boosts an estimated 1061 bird species, making it the leading African birding safari destination with over 50% of Africa’s bird richness and 11% of the world’s bird population. Of the country’s bird species, 15 are endangered and 11 are vulnerable; several species are classified as threatened at the global (e.g. Shoebill B. rex, Grey-crowned Crane B. regulorum) and regional (e.g. White-backed Night Heron G. leuconotos, Rufous-bellied Heron A. rufiventris) levels.

The 15-day Uganda and African birding safari starts from Mabamba bay on the shores of Lake Victoria. Mabamba was labelled an Important Bird Area by Birding International and it is highlighted by over 260 bird species. The place has both migratory and resident birds, some of which are globally threatened. Examples include the Blue swallow and the Papyrus Gonolek among others. From here, you will be transferred to Lake Mburo National Park for another birding escapade. The park is small but with varied habitats for its size. These range from acacia woodland, dry hillsides, rocky outcrops, bushy thickets, open and wooded savannah, seasonal and permanent swamps. It small size should not make you think there is nothing to keep you occupied. There are 14 lakes surrounding the park, 5 of which are found within the boundaries of Lake Mburo National Park. These lakes are part of a wetland system that is linked by a swamp that is some 50 km long, fed by the Ruizi River on the western side. The park’s varied habitants host over 315 species of birds like the African fish eagle and the African kingfisher. From here, you will be transferred Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the land of the mountain gorillas. Bwindi. Although majorly known for the mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a bird watchers’ haven!  The park is known to host an estimate of 347 species of birds. Within the misty forests, one can find 10 of the 26 globally threatened species in Uganda, five of which are vulnerable. The forest is gifted with 23 (90%) Albertine Rift endemics with examples like African Green Broadbill and the Chapin’s Flycatcher among others. You will also have options of doing gorilla trekking in the forest. Proceeding to Queen Elizabeth National park, you will have experiences within both sectors of the park. Queen Elizabeth National is gifted with over 600 species of birds. Some of them include: African spoonbill, African crake, three-banded plover, marsh sandpiper and others. While here, you will also have a boat cruise on the Kazinga channel and several game drives that will expose you to a plethora of wildlife.

From here, you will be transferred to Semliki National Park, a birder’s haven. The jungles of Semliki is home to over 435 species of birds. The park’s ecosystem is underlined by aquatic habitats of swamps and oxbow lakes which are complimented by forests and woodland structures. Right within the park’s landscape lies the spectacle of River Semliki. While here, you will see a number of birds, forest elephants, crocodiles, leopards, forest buffalos and crocodiles among others. From Semliki, you will visit Kibale National Park. The park’s beautiful habitants are felt by over 340 bird species that call this partly forest park their home. 77% of Kibale is covered by forests and the rest is summed up into swamps and grasslands. This makes Kibale spectacular. Some of the common bird species include: Superb Sunbird, African Pitta, White-thighed Hornbill, Grey-winged Robin, Blue-shouldered Robin-chat. While here, you will witness other species like primates and forest habitants in Bigodi wetlands. Bigodi is punctuated by biodiversity and beautiful scenery, and is a birder’s paradise with about 138 species. It also hosts eight species of primates including the black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey and red-tailed monkeys among other.

Day 1

Activity of the Day

Transfer to Mabamba Swamp on the Shores of Lake Victoria & Shoebill Boat Excursion and afternoon transfer to Lake Mburo National Park.

  • The guide will pick you up from your hotel in the morning and transfer you to Mabamba Swamp on the shores of Lake Victoria early in the morning at 7. am for a Mabamba swamp excursion.The excursion usually lasts for three hours although the option of a full day is also possible.The swamp is a beautiful environment of papyrus plants and water lilies. You will cruise through on boats while looking out for the majestic Shoebill. The shoe bill  usually hides within the papyrus and is known for feeding on lung fish. Along the way you will spot several different kind of birds which live and hunt in the swamp. Such birds include: African Pigmy Goose, Black Crake, Black Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Black-crowned Waxbill, Black-headed Heron, Black-winged Stilt, Pied Wagtail, African Firefinch, African Fish Eagle, African Green Pigeon, Pink-backed Pelican among others. Mabamba also hosts flocks of Paleartic migratory birds  from the October to March of every year. After the excursion, you will be transferred to Lake Mburo National Park. Check into the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2

Activity of the Day

Birding, game viewing and boat cruise on Lake Mburo.

  • After breakfast, you will have an early morning drive through the savannah and woodland landscapes. You will have a look at different bird species and wildlife within the swamps and savannah ecosystems. Such species include: the Bateleur, Coqui Francolin, Black-bellied Bustard, Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove, Brown Parrot, Red-headed Lovebird, Ross’s Turaco, Bare-faced Go-away-bird, Green Wood-hoopoe and the Common Scimitarbill among others.
    After lunch, you will have a boat cruise on lake mburo to observe some water birds including the rare finfoot. You will also have an optional trip to Rubanga forest.

Day 3

Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

  • After your breakfast, you will do an early morning birding game drive after which you will transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Southwestern Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to the endangered mountain gorillas. The park is a UNESCO heritage site that was founded in 1994 and it holds a plethora of wildlife and bird species. On reaching Bwindi, you will check into the lodge and look around your camp into the forest and communities to have a look at some birds. 

Day 4

Activity of the Day

Morning birding, forest and community walks at Bwindi.

  • After breakfast, follow around the different trails in the impenetrable forest to spot some bird species. The River Ivi Trail between Buhoma and Nkuringo is recommended, as is Buhoma’s forest-edge Munyaga River Trail. Ruhija’s Bamboo Trail, leading to the 2607m Rwamunyoni peak, and Mubwindi Swamp Trail areMunyanga River Trail, in the valley below the Buhoma trailhead, provides a short walk to view birds and primates along the forest edge. Waterfall Trail leads through one of Uganda’s most pristine tracts of rainforest, passing beneath tree ferns, epiphytic ferns and orchids to visit three sparking crystal clear waterfalls. Rushura Hill Trail provides expansive views across the plains of the Albertine Rift. Bwindi has 23 of the Albertine rift endemics and over 350 bird species. Some of such birds include: african emerald cuckoo, common bulbul, african blue, white-tailed blue flycatchers, the red-headed bluebill, the blue sun bird and the short-tailed warbler among others. You will move through the forest and watch some forest birds as well as the community.

Day 5

Activity of the Day

Optional gorilla trekking

  • After breakfast, you will transfer to the information center for gorilla trekking. You will be briefed about the guidelines and precautions of gorilla trekking. While here, you will carry out registration and join others for a gorilla trekking briefing about the precautions and guidelines of the gorilla trekking activity. You will then be assigned a gorilla group, meet the ranger guide and start the trek into the forest. The forest is usually wet and muddy with steep slopes. However, the sounds and sights of different birds and butterfly species offer a variety of form and color that satisfy you with a rare sort of happiness! The guide  will be ready to answer any question. During this period of time, you will also see a variety of forest birds within the forest. The gorillas are located in different places across the forest and therefore the time taken to find one group varies and can not be estimated before. It is just estimated to range from an hour to over 7 hours. Once you have reached them, you will be allowed to stay for one hour to observe these gentle giants. During this time, you will observe the gorillas carrying out their daily activities and also have photography moments. At the end of the trek, you will return to the park headquaters and information centre to pick certificates.

Day 6

Activity of the Day

Morning birding and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

  • After breakfast, you will do morning birding within the forest and after transfer to Ishasha sector in the South of Queen Elizabeth National Park. On your way to the lodge, you will also witness a few birds and game within this sector. Check into the lodge and have a look at some birds around your lodge.

Day 7

Activity of the Day

Birding in Ishasha

  • After breakfast, you will have a full day birding experience at Ishasha. Ishasha is home to the tree climbing lions and you will have chances of viewing these lions and have memorable experiences within the park. Queen Elizabeth national park is home to over 600 bird species. Ishasha has a diversity of landscapes that are home to a number of species. These include: shoebill, grey kestral, african green pigeon, african wattled plover, green crombec, brown snake eagle, stripped king fisher, helmeted guinea fowl, hooded vulture and the grey-backed fiscal among others. You will have different sessionsa and move through different areas to have stunning sites of birds. Go back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 8

Activity of the Day

Transfer to the Northern sector of Queen while birding in transit

  • After breakfast, you will transfer to the Northern sector of Queen Elizabeth National park. While in transit, you will witness many birds along the way. You will also have exciting views of wildlife and nature. Reaching the North, you will check into the lodge and do an evening gamedrive and have more sights of birds and wildlife. You can either take the route to Kasenyi plains or Mweya peninsula. You will see birds like the croaking cisticola, long created eagle, flapet lark, black belied bustard and the hooded vulture among others.

Day 9

Activity of the Day

Morning birding and afternoon boat cruise.

  • After breakfast, you will have an early morning drive through the Kasenyi plains. You will have sights of birds and other game. After this, you will transfer to the Mweya peninsula for a boat cruise. You will see a number of birds in the area before the boat cruise on Kazinga channel. The  44km long Kazinga channel connects Lake Edward and Lake Georgea and is home to a variety of bird species. Over 100 species of birds flock the channel such as Harmerkops, Ibis, Fish Eagles, Skimmers, Egrets, Pelicans, and Herons among others. You will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 10

Transfer to Semliki

  • After breakfast, transfer to Semliki National Park which is a birders' haven. You will have evening birding around he camp and witness a number of bird species. Dinner and overnight.

Day 11

Activity of the Day

Full day birding at Semliki.

  • After breakfast, you will have experiences in Semliki National Park. The jungles of Semliki are home to over 435 species of birds. Semlikis habitants are dominated by swamp, forest and lakes. You will have a walk to Semliki river which will expose you to a number of birds. You will witness species like the Long-tailed Hawk, Nkulengu Rail, Black-wattled Hornbill and the Congo Serpent Eagle among others.

Day 12

Activity of the Day

Transfer to kibale via amabeere ganyinamwiru.

  • After breakfast, you will transfer to Kibale National Park. Pass via amabeere ganyinamwiru for cultural experiences before checking into the lodge for evening birding.

Day 13

Activity of the Day

Half day birding and optional chimp trekking.

  • After breakfast, you will have a birding experience. The park’s beautiful habitants are felt by over 340 bird species that call this partly forest park their home. 77% of Kibale is covered by forests and the rest is summed up into swamps and grasslands. This makes Kibale spectacular. Some of the common bird species include: Superb Sunbird, African Pitta, White-thighed Hornbill, Grey-winged Robin, Blue-shouldered Robin-chat. You will also have an opportunity to do chimp trekking. You will transfer to Kanyanchu, at the park offices and vistor information centre at 7am to meet the ranger guides for registration and pre-trek briefing about what to do and not during chimpanzee trekking. After briefing, you will be divided into groups and each group will be assigned a ranger, after which you will set off to trek into the forest to track a community of Chimpanzees. The trek usually lasts between 3-5 hours and varies due to the movement of the Chimpanzees. 3 large communities of Chimpanzees have been habituated for the tracking adventure. Each of these communities was designed for different kinds of visitors; one is for chimpanzee tracking, the other is for research and the last one was designed for the habituation experience. You will locate the Chimps without so much straining since the location of each of the Chimp community is known before hand by advance trackers and communicated to your guides.

Day 14

Activity of the Day

Full day birding in Bigodi

  • After breakfast, you will have a birding session in Bigodi wetland sanctuary. Bigodi is punctuated by biodiversity and beautiful scenery, and is a birder’s paradise with about 138 species. It also hosts eight species of primates including the black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey and red-tailed monkeys among other. Bushbucks and mongooses can also be found here. The sanctuary was set up to preserve the exclusive environmental features along with the wetland and is managed by the local community. In this area, there are small establishments or groups of people that are prepared to take you through the two main activities, that is the Swamp walk and the community walk. In the swamp walk, you shall take a light walk in the wetlands to observe nature and wildlife including many bird species. During this walk, you will have the oportunity to spot some wildlife and bird species that you hadn't witnessed during the trek. Some of such birds include; the green breasted pitta which is endemic to Kibale forest, the rare Papyrus Gonolek and the great blue turaco.

Day 15

Activity of the Day

Transfer to Kampala.

  • Check out of your lodge and departure to Kampala. On reaching Kampala, you will have options of reaching Kampala, you will have options of reaching Mabira forest or Botanical gardens Entebbe for more birding experiences. 

General Tips:

  • Please note the age limit of 15 years and above for chimpanzee tracking.
  • Book your permits well in advance as permits are limited.
  • You should be free from infectious diseases such as Flue which can be passed to the primates since humans share 98.8% DNA with Chimpanzees. If you are found to carry an infectious disease you will not be allowed to track.
  • Every participant has the chance to hire a trekking assistance (porter) who will help carrying the bags and support whenever it is needed. For the trekking assistant an additional fee of US$ 15 is charged.
  • Please note the age limit of 15 years and above for gorilla tracking.
  • Book your permits well in advance as only 8 permits are issued per gorilla group in a day.
