5 day Uganda birding safari offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching around Uganda. The opportunity leads you to part of the 1057 species within Uganda. Within the country, there are a number of areas that are known to host a phenomenal number of birds. These areas are labelled to be of a great significance and are identified as Important and endemic Bird Areas by Birding International. Three endemic bird areas (EBAs) are known to partly lie within Uganda. These include the Albertine Rift mountains, the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo lowlands; and the exciting Kenyan mountains. The country has over 30 restricted range species, 24 of which can only be spotted within the Albertine Rift. On top of these endemic bird areas, the country also glows with a number of Important Bird Areas which are 30 in number and cover 7% of the country. These IBAs are distributed within five regions of the country: West, South west, East, north-west and south-central region (Lake Victoria Basin.) The west, near Uganda’s border with DRC has 6 IBAs, the Southwest has four, the south-central has eight, the East has 7 and the northwest has five. Examples include, Queen Elizabeth National Park (west) Bwindi Impenetrable National park (southwest) Mabamba and lutembe bay (south-central) Budongo forest (northwest) and Mount Elgon national park in the East.

This 5 day Uganda birding safari will offer you an exclusive experience at Mabamba swamp. Mabamba Shoebill Excursion is the most popular birding site in Uganda to observe the rare Shoebill stork, which is the most sought-after bird in Uganda. The 25 square kilometre large and extensive wetland is located along the northern shores of Lake Victoria, near Entebbe town. The marsh stretches through a narrow and long bay that is fringed with papyrus towards the main body of Lake Victoria and is punctuated by over 260 bird species. The bay has grown into an exceptional and phenomenal birding site and was awarded the title RAMSAR and as well labelled an Important Bird Area and a wetland of International Importance. The place has both migratory and resident birds, some of which are globally threatened. Examples include the Blue swallow and the Papyrus Gonolek among others.

After great experiences at Mabamba swamp, you will be transferred to Masindi for a Uganda African bird experience. You will have an encounter with forest birds at Budongo forest in the royal mile trail. The trail is famous for being home to some of the amazing birds. Some of such birds include: Yellow-crested Woodpecker, Brown-eared Woodpecker, Greenbuls, Fire-crested Alethe, Red-tailed Ant-thrush, Lemon-bellied Crombec, Rufus-crowned Eremomela, Chocolate-backed Kingfisher, Dwarf Kingfisher and the African Crowned Eagle among others. You will also have  chances of witnessing some of the primates within the forest like the blue monkeys and the colobus.

After the Budongo experience, you will have birding experiences at Murchison falls National Park. The largest park in Uganda, Murchison Falls National Park is the prime destination for wildlife and big game viewing safaris in Uganda. It is located along the Nile, covering 3,480 square kilometers of various habitats ranging from forest, grassland, riverine woodland, borassus palms, acacia savanna, water. The park has over 460 bird species, including the rare shoebill. The three main spots for bird watching are: The Nile Delta at Buligi, the virgin woods of Kaniyo Pabidi, and the area around the falls. Pabidi is a good place to see the endemic bird species. The Nile Delta is home to the Shoe Bill and other stunning water loving bird species. The Murchison Falls area is a good spot to watch the riverine and savannah forest birds. Bird watching is usually done with an accompanying activity. Hiking, boat rides, nature walks and hot air ballooning all offer great opportunities for bird watching. Examples of Bird species found at the Park include; African Fin Foot, Green-winged Phitilia, African Paradise Fly Catcher, Augur Buzzard, Barn owl, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Marsh Tchagra, Grey backed Camaroptera, The African Crake Crex, Helmeted Guinea Fowl, African Jacana, Lesser Moorhen, Glossy Ibis, Laughing Dove, The African Crake Crex, and many others. Day 1

Activity of the Day

Transfer to Mabamba Swamp on the Shores of Lake Victoria & Shoebill Boat Excursion and afternoon transfer to Masindi.

The guide will pick you up from your hotel in the morning and transfer you to Mabamba Swamp on the shores of Lake Victoria early in the morning at 7. am for a Mabamba swamp excursion. The excursion usually lasts for three hours although the option of a full day is also possible. The swamp is a beautiful environment of papyrus plants and water lilies. You will cruise through on boats while looking out for the majestic Shoebill. The shoe bill  usually hides within the papyrus and is known for feeding on lung fish. Along the way you will spot several different kind of birds which live and hunt in the swamp. Such birds include: African Pigmy Goose, Black Crake, Black Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Black-crowned Waxbill, Black-headed Heron, Black-winged Stilt, Pied Wagtail, African Firefinch, African Fish Eagle, African Green Pigeon, Pink-backed Pelican among others. Mabamba also hosts flocks of Palearctic migratory birds  from the October to March of every year. After the excursion, you will be transferred to Masindi in the west of Kampala. Check into your lodge. Dinner and overnight.

 

Day 2

Activity of the Day

 Budongo Forest birding safari.

Wake up early morning to navigate through the Royal-mile trail of Budongo forest. The royal-mile is a very famous birders' haven and rewards you with spectacular sightings of birds. You will witness the Chestnut-capped Flycatcher, Nahan’s Francolin and the Cassin’s Spinetail among other forest birds. Other birds to encounter include:, Yellow-browed Camaroptera, Yellow Long-bill, and Grey-throated Tit-Flycatcher, White-throated, Red-tailed and Honeyguide Greenbuls and the White-throated Bee-eaters  among others. After the safari, transfer to Murchison falls National Park.

 

Day 3

Activity of the Day

Early morning Birding, game drive and Afternoon Boat Cruise on River Nile to the Bottom of the Falls & Hike to the Top of the Falls.             

The early start is a better time and offers more chances for the great sightings of the nocturnal animals and elusive predators such as Lions, Hyenas, Leopard and Jackal, as they are still out actively hunting in the morning hours and haven’t returned to their hideouts. You will also witness a variety of birds. Since the Nile is a bird magnet, it offers an opportunity for one to tune in and listen to the melodious twitters of various birds that find the river environment an haven of rest. This birdlife is vey impressive, and keeps you constantly entertained, with a profusion of colours and species. After lunch set out for a 2-hour Launch Cruise (boat safari) on River Nile which sets off at Paraa, going upstream to the bottom of the Murchison Falls. Boat ride offers an array of wildlife sightings - crocodile, hippos, and lizards are a common sight throughout the cruise. As you reach the falls, you notice a lot of huge crocodiles amongst the largest ever seen amassed together. The place is called “Croc Bar.” Big game such buffaloes, elephants and antelopes can also be sighted drinking and cooling off the heat by the river banks and with a little luck, you might even spot a leopard resting in a tree close by the water. It is easy to see the animals at a close and clear encounter for many animals come to drink, bathe, and as well to eat some grass. You will witness more bird species at this area. Such include: Black-headed Plover, Rock Pratincole, Red-throated Bee-eater, Black-billed Barbet, Speckle fronted Weaver, and the White-browed Sparrow Weaver among others.

 

Day 4

Activity of the Day

Hot Air Balloon Safari in the Morning with or without Bush Breakfast, followed by a Game Drive.                 

You should be up by 5.00am, take a quick cup of coffee or tea with a snack to warm your tummy and set out for a safari experience of quite a different nature. Today morning, you have the chance to explore the park from high up in the air as we are going on an unforgettable Hot Air Balloon Safari, flying above the national park, observe a plethora of birds, herds of elephants and giraffes walking across the savannah below us. We might even spot a pride of lions resting in the grass after their night’s hunt or cross River Nile which seems so tiny from up here. Back down on the ground, we have the opportunity to enjoy a nicely prepared bush breakfast, followed by a game drive through the park. Explore the game trails towards the Lake Albert delta where big game such as the Elephants, Buffaloes, Giraffes, and many Antelopes are seen. Enjoy the beautiful savannah landscape that is immersed with plenty of life and wonderful scenery. The game drive will last for approximately 3 hours, and you have the choice of having a packed breakfast on the game drive or return to the lodge for breakfast.

Early morning game drive and departure.

After breakfast, you will do an early morning game drive and have more chances to spot birds. After  the game drive,depart.
